CHANEL Rouge Allure in Passion by Carmen

Have I found the perfect red?

It's hard to say what I look for in a lipstick, since it's so hard to know how you will get along with a new colour, texture, formula. I am not one to try out lipsticks at the counter - not even thoroughly wipping the tester will convince me to get it near my lips, and swatching it on the back of your hand is not accurrate in terms of colour, as most lipsticks interract with the natural colour of your lips. So it's pretty much a matter of realising that it might not look as pretty on you as it does in the tube.

To me, it's about that glamorous, sensual gesture of pulling a beautiful lipstick out of your bag and touching up after a lunch with your best friends in a fancy restaurant. And this CHANEL Rouge Allure in the colour 104 Passion is probaby it - the one, the most beautiful red, the epitome of chic. I am also not ashamed to say that I appreciate the beautiful sleek black and gold packaging, and the click mechanism may or may not have had something to do with my decision to give it a try.

The shade seems to me to be what beauty bloggers would call a blue red - and I know that because it instantly brightens your teeth, but it can photograph a bit on the orange side in some lights. The formula is quite buttery, not as slippery as a lip butter but similarly nourishing. The colour pay off is amazing, with an opaque colour in one swipe. I can't really comment on the staying power, I do not generally expect my lipsticks to survive undisturbed through 1,5 litres of water, one cup of cofee, lunch and a session of teeth brushing post lunch, this being the tipical day at the office for me (the only one that has ever managed to stay put also took a good 10 minutes of scrubbing to remove from my lips - check it out here) and I find long lasting formulaes to be quite difficult to top up, they can end up looking like you've put on too much lipstick (yes, there is such a thing as too much lipstick). I like to be able to lightly pat my lips with a clean tissue, then reapply and pretend that nothing happened. And this one allows me to do just that.

In terms of the rest of the make up, I like to keep it very simple and just pair it with my favourite foundation, Dior Forever for long lasting coverage and SPF, Bobbi Brown corrector in light peach under my eyes, a touch of bronzer in the form of Diorskin Nude Tan in 001 Aurora and whatever waterproof mascara I happen to be trying at the time. When wearing red lipstick, I also like to keep everything quite matte but natural, and to achieve that I have rediscovered my first ever powder and my first ever powder repurchase - Max Factor Creme Puff in Transparent, lightly swept in my T-zone.

I have been lusting for another few shades, I am especially curious about the matte ones, and I have been adding quite a few on my wishlist. In the meantime, I can't stop playing with the click mechanism and I can't wait for another excuse to  browse the CHANEL counter.
